MAXWELTON BRAES is one of the most established resorts in Door County, its long history linked to one of the earliest golf courses.

More recently, the Baileys Harbor resort has partnered with established restaurants to maintain that tradition. This summer will be no different but with a twist.

Welcome the Max, a bar/patio/pop-up concept that will provide a variety of eating and entertainment options.

When finding another restaurant to partner with didn’t pan out, owners Bill and Heather Andersen and staff came up with a new idea.

“Something that could truly take advantage of the many beautiful spaces around the lodge, including the large stone patio and expansive bar area,” said Aleah Kidd, who is handling the resort’s marketing. “Something that would offer a unique experience and let people escape the crowds in peak summer and something that the golfers would enjoy. I also knew that coming out of the peak of the pandemic, people were still looking for good places to gather outdoors and places that had plenty of room to space out when they did get together.”

So rather than lock in another restaurant, the idea of keeping the kitchen open to third parties came up, meaning that anyone who wanted to host a dinner or event could bring in their food caterer of choice.

“And then we could also set up weekly rotating food options including food trucks, kitchen takeovers and pop-up style dinners. Guests can come eat, drink and play at the bar, patio or in the lodge,” said Kidd. As of deadline, details were still getting finalized, but different nights could mean different fare from Friday fish fries, tacos, BBQs, jerk chicken and more.

“Outside of the weekly food options there will be several bigger events throughout the summer including live music, fundraisers for local charities and community organizations beginning with local fire departments,” said Kidd. “At its core, though, we want the bar to feel like a casual, welcoming place where golfers, locals and anyone can come and relax and have an affordable drink. For the first time in a long time we will be open consistently 7 days a week from 11 a.m.-9 p.m.”

“We are thrilled to make available a beautiful historic Baileys Harbor venue that can showcase many of our Door County chefs and restaurants, food trucks and caterers for any size event indoors or outdoors,” said Bill Andersen. “We’re also excited to add a casual bar to Maxwelton’s beautiful lodge and golf course.”
